Tilling the sky
Recarbonizing the soil
On October 16 and 17, 2021, the conference “Atmosterra: tilling the sky, recarbonizing the soil” was held in Barcelona, in the Sala Prat de la Riba of the Institute of Catalan Studies (IEC) – Calle del Carme 47 – 08001. in mixed format, online and face-to-face.
Atmosterra was made within the scope of the activities of Barcelona World Capital of Sustainable Food 2021
Atmosterra is part of the activities of “Barcelona Sustainable Food Capital of the World 2021”

Create links and knowledge towards the transition
The conference aims to create links and knowledge that promote the transition to resilient, healthy, fair and diversified food systems.
Central issues
The conference aims to create links and knowledge that promote the transition to resilient, healthy, fair and diversified food systems.

Our food systems
The current system of food production and consumption is one of the main causes of emissions of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere.
The impact is not limited to the climate crisis , but is strongly linked to the degradation of agricultural land, water pollution, overexploitation of animals and the mass extinction of species.
The necessary decarbonization of our society is pending a fundamental axis of work in our food system.

Reduce excess atmospheric carbon
The food sector, although a net generator of GHG emissions, has the potential to reverse its current position towards a decisive role for carbon storage .
Agricultural soils can fix carbon and reduce the excess atmospheric carbon that causes global warming , while increasing soil fertility, water availability, reducing input exports, and improving the viability of farms.

Transformation among all
These transformations of the food system require social support, the consensus of the productive sector and the collaboration of the scientific world and the administration to make them viable and efficient.
That is why the promoters convene a meeting of all stakeholders – farmers, ranchers, consumers, scientists, academics – in order to know, discuss and establish a framework for cooperation for the future with the aim of promoting this transformation.
The purpose of the day is
The conference aims to create links and knowledge that promote the transition to resilient, healthy, fair and diversified food systems.
Atmosterra was born from the concern of …
The need to face a climate crisis generated, above all, by human activity during the last two hundred years, has led a group of entities and institutions to propose the organization of these days.
To share knowledge and practices that can reverse the generation of greenhouse gases motivated by agricultural and livestock production.
